How does Viagra work?

Viagra’s primarily way of improving penile erection is keeping the smooth muscle of the penis relaxed. This is the main factor affecting the blood circulation in male penis, which is crucial for having a good erection. Good blood flow means a strong and durable erection. But few of us know, that Viagra was initially intended to treat blood pressure problems.

In 1990’s clinical studies on Sildenafil (chemical name of Viagra) the producer company — Pfizer — has proven Viagra to be not as effective to treat blood pressure issues as expected. Instead, many male participants of the studies have reported to have strong durable erection when their penis was stimulated. And beyond that, some men who have had a history of erectile dysfunction have also reported some improvements in their sexual abilities. These observations made Pfizer company change the direction of their studies and use Viagra for treating male impotence. And the studies were a success!

Although, Viagra was not quite effective in dealing with blood pressure diseases, it still affects the blood pressure. That is why it’s recommended to not take Viagra in case you’re prescribed drugs that control blood pressure, especially nitrates. This may cause fainting and dizziness, and can actually put your life in danger.

There weren’t observed any significant side-effects with Viagra. In rare cases headaches and vision problems were reported, but no clinical studies have found a direct link between these conditions and the use of Viagra. Viagra is safe to take for men with diabetes, high blood pressure and depression.
